It is 1980-something on a humid summer day in Virginia Beach. All my cousins and their neighbors are together, and I am sure something fabulous like Duran Duran or Madonna was playing from a boom box. A neighbor, Charlie, was arriving from his coastal restaurant with oodles of seafood goodies. A block party like no other. I had never encountered crab and lobster outside of a shell on the beach or a picture in a book. All that would change today. Today would be a lesson in savory treats. Cracking shells and warm dipping butter. Clam bakes and grilled corn on the cob. Kids playing and adults laughing. This day would be etched in my mind forever. . .
Fast forward nearly 20 years. I am living in the desert with a great husband and four precious kids. I love Scottsdale. I love Arizona. However, my heart aches throughout the year to hear the crash of waves and to have family experiences like that day in Virginia. Being landlocked messes with my head at times. I try and get my kids to the beach as often as I can. There is something within me–a piece of my history–that needs them to be beach bums. It’s working but this one area has been evasive. But recently we did have a brief taste of it. We had the opportunity to go to Joe’s Crab Shack and check out their new kids menu.
Kids Menu. They can be irritating words to a mom of an allergy kid. There are never items on a kids menu that my little one can eat. Although many of the items on the Joe’s Crab Shack kid’s menu are breaded and/or deep fried, I was delighted to see 3 items that were healthier. These were the Kid’s Steampot, The Kid’s Snow Crab and the Shrimply Grilled Shrimp. We did a combo of child and adult menus. The Steampot off the adult menu to share and the Shrimply Grilled Shrimp & Captain’s Catch off the children’s. The kids had a great time! They loved their meals and were tickled to climb into our laps and learn how to crack and zip and dip. Each time we have talked about eating out since then, they have asked to go to Joe’s Crab Shack. It might not have included the beach, but Joe’s Crab Shack gave our kids a little memorable moment they won’t soon forget. Now, Joe’s Crab Shack would like to give one of our readers a little beach-y experience; a $50 gift card!
